GOVERNOR HALEY BARBOUR ORDERS LOWERING OF FLAGS IN HONOR OF EVELYN GANDY

(JACKSON, Mississippi)—Governor Haley Barbour today ordered the U.S. and Mississippi flags flown at half-staff in honor of long-time Mississippi public servant Evelyn Gandy, the first female elected to the statewide offices of State Treasurer, Insurance Commissioner, and Lieutenant Governor.

“Marsha and I join with all Mississippians in mourning the loss of Ms. Gandy, whose dedicated service made her one of the most significant public servants in state history. In honor of her historic contributions, I am directing the Department of Finance and Administration to lower the U.S. and Mississippi flags to half-staff,” Governor Barbour said.

In accordance with the Governor’s Executive Order, U.S. and Mississippi flags on all state buildings and grounds will be flown at half-staff beginning at sunrise on Dec. 27, 2007 and ending at sunset on Friday, Dec. 28, 2007.
