GOVERNOR BARBOUR PROCLAIMS “STAY ALERT. STAY ALIVE.” HURRICANE AWARENESS CAMPAIGN
8-Week Campaign to Focus on Hurricane Preparedness

 

Stay Alert. Stay Alive. Hurricane Awareness(JACKSON, Mississippi) – Governor Haley Barbour has officially proclaimed a statewide hurricane awareness campaign entitled “Stay Alert. Stay Alive.” from April 6 to June 2, 2006.  During these eight weeks, a partnership of various state agencies, non-profit organizations and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency will focus on various aspects of being prepared for the 2006 hurricane season.

 

“Preparation is the key focus of ‘Stay Alert. Stay Alive’,” Governor Barbour said. “This campaign is designed to help citizens make well-informed decisions in advance so they can be well prepared for the upcoming hurricane season.”

 

Below is the text of Governor Haley Barbour’s Proclamation for “Stay Alert. Stay Alive.”:

WHEREAS, on August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina made landfall on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and is now known as the worst natural disaster in our nation’s history; and

 

WHEREAS, Mississippians are rebuilding their lives, homes, businesses, communities and futures despite this catastrophic storm; and

 

WHEREAS, by promoting awareness of the danger to the public’s health and safety that hurricanes pose and helping with relief efforts when these powerful storms strike, we can reduce the risks of hurricane damage and help our neighbors recover more quickly from their devastating effects. With education, preparation, forecasting and coordination, we can save lives and improve Mississippi’s ability to withstand the impact of hurricanes; and

 

WHEREAS, through local, state and federal government entities and volunteer organizations throughout our state have taken precautionary measures to prepare for the 2006 hurricane season and to make sure that all Mississippians are prepared;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Haley Barbour, Governor of the State of Mississippi, hereby proclaim the week beginning April 6 and ending June 2, 2006 as a statewide hurricane awareness campaign,

“Stay Alert. Stay Alive.”

 

and urge all government agencies, private organizations, news media and residents in hurricane-prone areas to share information about hurricane preparedness and response in order to help prevent storm damage and save lives.
