STATEMENT OF GOV. BARBOUR ON SEPTEMBER UNEMPLOYMENT RATE

“Today the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released new employment numbers showing that for the sixth consecutive month, Mississippi’s unemployment rate has declined. While our rate of 9.8 percent is still too high, this preliminary data demonstrates our state’s economy is gradually recovering,” Gov. Haley Barbour said. “Private sector growth is strengthening and will enable Mississippi to lead the way out of this recession, but full recovery is still a long way off.  Despite some growth in revenue there will be a serious shortfall in funds available for next year’s state budget. Several hundred million dollars of federal stimulus money will no longer be available, so state government leaders need to prepare for more belt-tightening.”
