Nora Davis Magnet School of Laurel, Mississippi Receives
As you walk through the doors of Nora Davis Magnet School, you notice that something is alive, creative and thriving. Learning is taking place everywhere. Nora Davis Magnet School is a school that uses the power of the arts to teach, motivate and restore student achievement and lives. As you walk down the halls you see student-created murals, artwork and sculptures. You will hear singing, music and movement being used to teach curriculum. Students are engaged, and they learn creative and practical applications for what they are being taught.
Nora Davis has been part of the Whole Schools Initiative for eight years and recognized as a Model School for Arts Integration for three years. Infusing the arts has enabled the students to become motivated learners. Students learn in a better way, in a positive, creative environment with enthusiastic and motivating teachers challenging students to reach their full potential through their talents and strengths. Professional development for all staff members comes from the Whole Schools Initiative where nationally known leaders train teachers from around the state in innovative, effective and creative arts integrated strategies.
The successes are the result of a faculty and administration that values students above all; a school culture that strives for excellence in education and in the arts; and a community that is committed to continued success. Teachers, arts specialists, and teaching artists involved in Nora Davis have all been recognized as leaders in the field of arts integration. The National Association for Music Education (MENC) recently selected Nora Davis as one of 12 schools nationwide that provide a Model Music Program.
