Governor Barbour Honors Morgan Freeman

(Jackson, Miss.)—Governor Haley Barbour today proclaimed April 21 as “Morgan Freeman Day” in honor of the Oscar-winning actor who is a native Mississippian. Best known for his roles in movies such as Street Smart, Driving Miss Daisy, The Shawshank Redemption, and Million Dollar Baby, Freeman is regarded as one of the finest actors in Hollywood today.

“Morgan Freeman is a Mississippi treasure,” said Governor Barbour. “He continues to give back to his community and state, and Marsha and I truly appreciate his efforts in promoting Mississippi worldwide. Morgan deserves this recognition, and I am very proud to proclaim April 21 as ‘Morgan Freeman Day.’”

Morgan Freeman was born in Greenwood and has currently settled onto family land in Tallahatchie County. When the actor is not working, he spends time at home on his Mississippi ranch or in the air flying. Many times, Freeman can be found at his nationally known fine-dining restaurant, Madidi, or at his Ground Zero Blues Club, both located in Clarksdale. Freeman is married to the former Myrna Colley-Lee. Together, they have four children: Alfonso, Saifoulaye, Deena, and Morgana.

Freeman began his career in theatre, earning Obie awards for “Best Actor” in Driving Miss Daisy, Gospel at Colonus, and Coriolanus. He received a Tony nomination for The Mighty Gents. Freeman first became recognizable through his role as “Easy Reader” on the Public Broadcasting System (PBS) series, The Electric Company, and later as a regular in the daytime drama Days of Our Lives. Landing his first film lead in 1987’s Street Smart, Freeman’s performances have since earned him Oscar nominations for Driving Miss Daisy, The Shawshank Redemption, and Million Dollar Baby. The Mississippi actor has directed four films and even contributed as a screenwriter; in fact, Freeman’s reputation as a versatile and reputable artist has earned him high regard among industry professionals.
