GOVERNOR BARBOUR APPOINTS SIMPSON TO LICENSED PROFESSIONAL COUNSELORS BOARD
(JACKSON, Mississippi)-Governor Haley Barbour has appointed Laura R. Simpson, of Cleveland, to the Board of Examiners for Licensed Professional Counselors, which regulates the practice of counseling as well as the use of the title “Licensed Professional Counselor” in order to protect the health, safety, and welfare of Mississippi citizens.
“Laura is extremely well-qualified for this position, and I’m proud she will join the other members of this board to help protect the residents of Mississippi from unqualified counselors,” Governor Barbour said.
Simpson is assistant professor of counselor education at Delta State University, where she has worked four years. Previously, she was Adult/DD Services Coordinator for Region I Mental Health Center from 1991 to 2005. A member of the executive board for the Mississippi Counseling Association, Simpson was honored as the 2007 Research Award winner by this organization. She is a member of the executive board for Mississippi Licensed Professional Counselors Association as well as the American Counseling Association and the Southern Association for Counselor Educators and Supervisors. In addition, Simpson is an editorial board member of the Journal of Counseling and Practice.
Simpson holds a bachelor’s degree in speech and master’s degree in community counseling from Delta State University. She earned a doctorate in counselor education from the institution in 2005.
Simpson has two children, Austin and Anna.
