GOVERNOR BARBOUR APPOINTS CALLENDER TO STATE INTERAGENCY COORDINATING COUNCIL FOR EARLY INTERVENTION

(JACKSON, Mississippi) – Governor Haley Barbour has appointed Stacy A. Callender, of Jackson, to the State Interagency Coordinating Council for Early Intervention (SICC), whose mission is to assist the Mississippi Department of Health and other agencies on matters dealing with early intervention for children with developmental disabilities, especially infants and toddlers.

“I appreciate Stacy’s willingness to promote early intervention through this council, so developmentally challenged children can have a better chance at improving their educational and skill levels and enhance their quality of life,” Governor Barbour said. “She’s a welcome addition to this very important group.”

The SICC is statutorily required to consist of parents, public and private providers, a member of the Mississippi legislature, and a member from one of the state’s eight institutions of higher learning, as well as representation from other state agencies involved in early intervention and health insurance.

Callender is a research associate at the Mississippi State University Early Childhood Institute. Prior to this position, she was a lecturer for the university’s Counseling, Educational Psychology and Special Education sector and served as a school-based therapist. Callender is a member of the National Association of School Psychologists and the Mississippi Early Childhood Association. Within her community, Callender serves as a national and state member of Common Cause and the League of Women Voters, where she also served as director of the group’s early childhood education study.

An honors graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi, Callender holds a bachelor’s degree from the institution. She earned a master’s degree in educational psychology from the University of Minnesota, where she is currently a doctoral candidate. Callender and her husband, Jassen, have been married 15 years.
