(Jackson, Mississippi)—Governor Haley Barbour today announced the appointment of Dr. William Mayo, of Oxford, to the Mississippi Board of Medical Licensure. This board is responsible for licensing medical professionals and for setting policies and standards regulating the practice of these professions. As part of its mission, the board investigates and disciplines licensees not in compliance with requirements and protects citizens from unscrupulous practitioners.


“He is a good choice to fill this position,” Governor Barbour said. “Having extensive clinical and medical experience, Dr. Mayo is well-qualified to serve on this licensure board. I am confident he will be an asset to the people of Mississippi.”


Dr. Mayo has worked in his own clinical practice, Mayo Eye Center, since 1996. He is board certified by the Osteopathic College of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, and by the American Board of Ophthalmology. Actively involved in professional and civic organizations, Dr. Mayo is a member of the American Osteopathic Association; American Academy of Ophthalmology; Mississippi Osteopathic Medical Association; Mississippi State Medical Association; North Mississippi Physicians Association IPA; Rotary Club; and American Red Cross.


Dr. Mayo graduated from the University of Mississippi with a bachelor’s degree in zoology and English. He attended the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where he completed his ophthalmology residency and internship, and the University of Health Sciences, College of Osteopathic Medicine. He and his wife, Cherri, have two children, Brad and Rush.
