Governor Haley Barbour has appointed J. Kirkham Povall of Cleveland to the Mississippi Tort Claims Board. Povall will serve as the board’s chairman.

“Mr. Povall’s extensive legal experience and public service give him the knowledge to lead the Tort Claims Board,” Governor Barbour said. “I appreciate his commitment to serving Mississippi.”

Povall is an attorney at Povall & Jeffreys, P.A. and has 35 years of experience in the practice of law. Previously, he worked with Jacobs, Eddins & Povall. He is a former board member of the Mississippi Bar Commission, and a member of the several professional organizations, including the Mississippi Bar Foundation and the Mississippi Municipal Association. He was president of the Bolivar County Bar Association. He also served on the Board of Trustees for the Mississippi Health Care Trust Fund.

Povall served as director of the Cleveland Chamber of Commerce and the Industrial Development Foundation of Bolivar County. He is a past president of the Cleveland United Way. His military experience includes activation during Desert Storm and Desert Shield. He has received numerous medals including the Army Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Achievement Medal and the Mississippi War Medal.

Povall earned his bachelor’s degree in history and political science and a law degree from the University of Mississippi. He and his wife, Hilda, have four children, John S. Povall, Mary Elizabeth P. Jeffreys, Margaret P. Shivers and Kirkham W. Povall.
