GOVERNOR BARBOUR APPOINTS WEEMS TO STATE BOARD OF EXAMINERS FOR LICENSED PROFESSIONAL COUNSELORS

Governor Haley Barbour has appointed Lela Weems of Pass Christian to the Mississippi State Board of Examiners for Licensed Professional Counselors.

The five-member board ensures continuity and professional oversight of the regulation of Licensed Professional Counselors within the state. Weems, who represents the Fourth Congressional District, will serve a term ending June 30, 2013. She replaces board member Carol B. Jones.

“Weems’ experience as a licensed professional counselor and as a mental health therapist makes her an asset to the board,” Governor Barbour said. “I look forward to working with her.”

Weems has had a private mental health therapy and counseling practice for 10 years. She served as an assistant professor at the University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast campus and as a psychologist at the South Mississippi Regional Center. She earned a Psychology Professional of the Year award in 2003 and was named Counselor of the Year in 2007 by the Mississippi Licensed Professional Counselors Association.

Weems was a member of the Advisory Board Task Force for the Mississippi Center for Nonprofits and served as president of the Gulf Coast Counseling Association. She graduated from Long Beach High School. She has earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology, a master’s degree in counseling psychology and a doctorate in experimental psychology from the University of Southern Mississippi.
