Governor Barbour to Host House and Senate Leaders
in Jackson for Budget Summit

(Jackson, Miss.) - Governor Haley Barbour announced today he has invited House and Senate leaders to Jackson next Tuesday to discuss the budget and other essential legislation before officially calling a special session. Governor Barbour said he will work with legislative leaders to develop a process to enact a budget for Mississippi and address other essential legislation.

"I hope we can quickly agree on how to proceed and arrive at an acceptable budget," said Governor Barbour. "Agreeing in advance to an operational framework is critical to the special session being productive and brief."

The 2005 Legislative Session ended earlier this month without a budget being approved for the upcoming fiscal year which begins July 1. A budget will have to be approved during a special session.

Governor Barbour has not yet indicated when the special session will take place but said the timing for the session will depend on how talks proceed. "I want to give legislative leaders a chance to work out as many differences as possible before I decide to call a special session," said Governor Barbour.
