GOVERNOR HALEY BARBOUR FILLS CHANCERY COURT VACANCY

(Jackson, Miss.) – Governor Haley Barbour today announced that State Representative Randy “Bubba” Pierce, of Leakesville, has been appointed to the Mississippi Chancery Court (16th District) representing Jackson, George, and Greene counties. Pierce will serve in former Judge Glenn Barlow’s post due to his recent retirement effective February 1, 2005. Pierce will serve the remainder of Barlow’s current term which runs through 2006, and he is expected to seek reelection to the judgeship that year.

“My Judicial Appointments Advisory Committee has worked hard to ensure only qualified, conscientious, and dedicated people serve as judges,” said Governor Barbour. “Representative Pierce is the best choice for this post. Selecting our State’s judges is not about party or politics. He will be an asset to Mississippi’s judicial system.”

Representative Randy “Bubba” Pierce, a Democrat, served in the House of Representatives for more than five years and has been Chairman of the Education Committee. He also served on the Appropriations, Corrections, Forestry, Judiciary A and Select Committee on Accessible and Affordable Medical Malpractice Insurance committees. In addition to being an attorney, Pierce is also a Certified Public Accountant.

He is a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi and the University of Mississippi School of Law. Pierce is member of the Rotary Club, the American Institute of CPAs, the Mississippi Society of CPAs and the Mississippi Bar. He is married to the former Gayla Smith and they have three children.

In the beginning of his term, Governor Barbour issued Executive Order 914 which created a Judicial Appointments Advisory Committee to review all qualified applicants for judicial appointments. Every judge Barbour has appointed has been screened by the Judicial Appointments Advisory Committee and found fully qualified to serve.
