GOVERNOR HALEY BARBOUR APPOINTS DIRECTOR OF THE MISSISSIPPI BUREAU OF NARCOTICS

(Jackson, Miss.) – Governor Haley Barbour today named Marshall Fisher, of Brandon, as the Director of the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics (MBN). A 28-year veteran of law enforcement, Fisher has experience in criminal investigations, undercover work, supervising narcotics task forces and served as an officer on the local, state and federal level.

“Marshall brings an array of law enforcement expertise and impeccable credentials to this position,” said Governor Haley Barbour. “He will continue our efforts in more coordination with local law enforcement agencies while aggressively fighting drug crimes across the State. After working for the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), he knows the inner workings of MBN because he’s worked so closely with them over the years.”

Fisher has recently retired as Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the DEA, Section Chief in Arlington, Virginia, Special Operations Division Unit Chief in Lorton, Virginia, and DEA Headquarters Staff Coordinator. While with the DEA, Fisher managed three offices in Mississippi with a combined staff of 75 employees, including federal agents, state and local officers, intelligence analysts and administrative support personnel.

He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice from Memphis State University in 1977. He has training in Supervision, Criminal Investigation, Defense Tactics, Conspiracy and Wiretap and Asset Forfeiture. He is also a Navy Veteran.

Legislation passed in 2004 allowed MBN to merge with the Department of Public Safety. Since the merger, drug arrests, seizures and convictions have significantly increased, even though the Bureau of Narcotics now operates with fewer personnel than two years ago. In fact, year-end figures for 2004 show drug arrests up 73 percent over 2003 figures.
