Statement of Governor Haley Barbour on President Bush’s
Visit to Mississippi

“On behalf of all Mississippians, I want to thank President Bush for choosing Mississippi as a place to come to talk about such an important national issue as Social Security. The men and women of Nissan and Mississippians from across the state had the rare opportunity to hear directly from their President.

It was also a great opportunity for President Bush to see all of the wonderful things that are going on right here in Mississippi. President Bush was impressed with the workers at Mississippi’s Nissan facility and moved by his meetings with Mississippi National Guard families who have loved ones on active duty.

Thousands of Mississippians depend on Social Security right now and thousands more will depend on it in the future. I appreciate the President’s leadership on the issue and his willingness to make saving Social Security a priority in his second term. That’s good news for America and good news for Mississippi.”
