First Lady Marsha Barbour Opens 2006 Mississippi
Charity Horse Show

(Jackson, Miss.) – Mississippi First Lady Marsha Barbour officially opened on horseback the 2006 Mississippi Charity Horse Show at 6:00 p.m. in the Mississippi Coliseum on Thursday.

This three-day event continues through April 22 when some of the best Walking Horses from around the world are matched in Mississippi’s Charity Horse Show. Every year the proceeds from the event are donated to a worthy charity.

Proceeds from the 2006 Mississippi Charity Horse Show will be donated to the Mississippi Animal Disaster Relief Fund, established immediately after Hurricane Katrina, as a tax exempt donation to assist individuals impacted by the storm.

“I always enjoy opening the Mississippi Charity Horse Show,” Mrs. Barbour said. “It is such an impressive event, and this year’s proceeds will add to the many efforts from throughout the state and nation to help Mississippi recover from Hurricane Katrina.”

The relief funds are specifically used to help veterinarians and animal owners who request financial aid to be used for animal care, sheltering and veterinary needs. All requests are reviewed by a panel, and donations to this fund may be contributed for use on an “as needed” basis or for a specified segment of animal owners, such as equine owners.

The Mississippi Charity Horse Show began in 1930 and has been a well-known venue for many world champions of the past. The event is a celebration of the breed, as well as a premier society event for the State of Mississippi and the City of Jackson.
