MDOT, KMB and First Lady Marsha Barbour Team Up to Clean Up

Jackson, Miss., Tuesday, March 08, 2005 - Leaders from the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) and Keep Mississippi Beautiful (KMB), join Mississippi First Lady Marsha Barbour to kick-off Mississippi's eighth annual Great American Cleanup (GAC) event on Tuesday, March 8, 2005 on the steps of the Capitol.

The GAC, KAB's signature event and the nation's largest annual community improvement program, is held March through May and rallies people to make sweeping, dramatic changes from coast-to-coast. Community leaders report that the GAC results show that safety increases in clean communities on several levels and in many ways, including:

People involved in the GAC experience an increased sense of unity in the neighborhoods, and feel more at ease; Communities are "healthier" because cleanups help eliminate illegal dumpsites, reducing the risk of mosquitoes, rodents and the threat of West Nile disease; Children can play more safely in parks and recreation areas where dangerous objects and trash have been removed; and Water cleanups help eliminate health hazards from drinking water.

Generous and enthusiastic support from national sponsors is helping to produce the 20th Anniversary Great American Cleanup program a reality. The 2005 sponsors include: American Honda Motor Company, Cingular Wireless, Firestone, GLAD ForceFlex Trash Bags, SPARKLE Paper Products, Pepsi-Cola Company, The Scotts Company, Troy-Bilt, Waste Management, and Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company.

Keep America Beautiful, Inc., is a national, nonprofit public education organization whose goal is to form community partnerships dedicated to engaging individuals to take greater responsibility for enhancing their communities. Keep America Beautiful's Great American Cleanup is built on a foundation of civic pride and individual responsibility.
