June 1, 2004 Statement from Governor Haley Barbour Regarding Campaign Finance Bill “I was prepared to proudly sign the campaign finance bill because I support its disclosure requirements adding openness to our political process. However, I cannot support the last-minute language inserted in the bill during conference that chills open, publicly disclosed political participation. This restriction was never mentioned as the intention of the bill’s authors.. Because of this, I am disappointed that I was forced to veto the whole bill because of a problem with only part of it. If the bill authors and the leadership of the Legislature would agree to simply take out the problem language and send me the rest of the bill, I would add the campaign finance bill to a Special Session agenda. Mississippi would benefit from this bill’s additional political disclosure, but not its additional political restriction.”
