Regarding Baxter Healthcare Corporation in Cleveland

“Over the past year and a half, we have seen positive developments in the Mississippi Delta. Baxter Healthcare Corporation is one of those critical industries that employs hundreds of Mississippians in jobs we simply cannot afford to lose.

To compete in today’s market, the company must upgrade its facilities, some of which are more than a half-century old. Last year the Legislature made a multi-year commitment to help the company invest in new technology. To date, the state has not honored its commitment for 2005.

Later this month, Baxter’s corporate board will meet and make decisions about the fate of the Baxter plant in Cleveland. My office has been advised by Baxter’s Cleveland manager that they must submit a plan to the corporate board by July 24, and I want to help them meet that deadline. I have advised the Lt. Governor and Speaker that I am willing to call a Special Session of the Legislature if they agree that bonds committed for this specific project would be the sole item on the agenda. The Lt. Governor has agreed to this approach.

We need to save these valuable jobs and not allow them to be shipped out-of-state or out of the country.”
