Governor Barbour Appoints Junkin to
College Savings Plans Board of Directors

(Jackson, Miss.)—Governor Haley Barbour today announced the appointment of Johnny Junkin, of Natchez, to the board of directors of the College Savings Plans of Mississippi. This board has oversight of the trust fund generated from citizen contributions into the Mississippi Affordable College Savings (MACS) or the Mississippi Prepaid Affordable College Tuition (MPACT) Program. These plans offer unique means to help Mississippi families save for college.

“John is an excellent choice for this position,” Governor Barbour said. “He brings a wealth of talent and years of educational experience to the table, and I am confident he will serve the citizens of Mississippi well.”

Junkin has been practicing in a private law firm since 1976. From 1978 to 1980, Junkin served as the Natchez City Prosecuting Attorney. He also served as a member of the House of Representatives from 1980 to 1988; vice president and operator of Main Street Restaurant, Inc., d.b.a. Scrooges from 1984 to 1998; and vice president of St. Catherine Gravel and Ready Mix Concrete Company, Inc. from 1989 to present. Junkin is the past vice chairman of the Natchez-Adams County Convention and Visitors Bureau, past member of the Mississippi Ethics Commission, and past member and vice chair of the State Board for Community and Junior Colleges. He is a member of the Natchez Chapter of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, Natchez Kiwanis Club, and the Knights of Columbus Council 1034 and Fourth Degree. Professionally, Junkin is a member of the Mississippi and Adams County Bar Associations and Mississippi Prosecutors Association. Additionally, he served as the past co-chair of the Committee on Resolutions of the Mississippi Young Lawyers Association and past Commissioner of the Adams County Law Library. In 1979, Junkin was chosen to receive the “Natchez Outstanding Young Man” award.

Junkin received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern Mississippi and earned his juris doctorate from the University of Mississippi. He is a member of both the University of Southern Mississippi and the University of Mississippi Alumni Associations.
